After plenty of research on Raising Boys, I found myself down a plethora of rabbit holes excavating some topics I’d unintentionally stumbled across. For me, I love that aspect of The Thread. The digging, the learning, the free education. So I thought it only fair that at the end of each series, I’ll leave you with The Probe, a space with links to things I’ve read, watched and listened to that you might find beneficial. Dig in.
The Mask of Masculinity, Lewis Howes. A book exploring how men can embrace vulnerability, create strong relationships, and live their fullest lives. A book not just for men, but for women to better understand the men in their lives.
Raising Boys, Steve Biddulph. A from one of the world’s best parenting educators and psychologist of 30 years, this book explores raising boys in the 21st century including how ADHD may be caused by stress in the first year of life, how important it is to let boys cry, and how crying helps avoid violence, suicide, and risky behaviour and what we can do about boys and binge drinking.
Challenging Gender Stereotypes In the Early Years, Our Watch. This evidence paper, published in 2018, explores the gender stereotypes young children are exposed to, in both the home and wider community, and how a fluid approach can directly impact on the social issue of violence against women.
The Mask You Live In - A documentary exploring how our cultures narrow definition of masculinity is harming our boys, men and society at large and unveils what we can do about it. Available on Netflix.
Why I’m Done Trying To Be Man Enough, TED Talk with Justin Baldoni - Justin wants to start a dialogue with men about redefining masculinity, to figure out ways to be not just good men but good humans. In a warm, personal talk, he shares his effort to reconcile who he is with who the world tells him a man should be. Watch HERE.
Violence Against Women - It’s a Men’s Issue, TED Talk with Jackson Katz. Domestic violence and sexual abuse are often called "women's issues."
